new music reflection #3

Well, it was my birthday yesterday & now it's time to add my third music reflection. Here are the CDs I've received/discovered/bought this month [January 2007]:

  • To the Bone, The Kinks [Capitol]
  • Kinked, Dave Davies [Koch Records]
  • A Basket of Light, Pentangle [Castle]
  • The 5000 Spirits or Layers of the Onion / The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter, The Incredible String Band [Collector's Choice]
  • Open Road, Donovan [Repertoire]
  • In Concert, Donovan [EMI]
  • Swarb! Forty Five Years of Folk's Finest Fiddler, Dave Swarbrick [Free Reed]

Like my last entry I'm going to limit my reflections to a couple of the above-listed CDs.

Here's an interesting tale ... One day a young lad stepped into a CD shop in Little Italy. He sauntered to the book section of the shop and perused two well-known album guides. Having heard the names Pentangle and the Incredible String Band many times before, he sought out critical reviews of their work. After inspecting the folk aisle the man eventually decided to buy the combined package of The 5000 Spirits or Layers of the Onion / The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter by the ISB and the renounded A Basket of Light by Pentangle. Over the next few weeks the lad listened to the three albums with much interest. Initially, he liked the jazzy folk of A Basket of Light best but as he listened to wacky sounds of the ISB more and more they grew into one of his favourite bands (not to diminish the beauty of A Basket of Light in the least bit). The lad will always remember January 15th as a day of musical enlightenment.
